Saddle Day

In preparation for the arrival of Rosie's custom saddle I figured we better get going! My  "good barrel saddle" as the kids have named it seemed to fit her fine. She was perfect putting it on and walking to the arena, but I did notice she was a little tense and not wanting to stick to me as she has been. So we played a bit more active catching game and she seemed to settle and come to me.

She was really good on line and stepping under and back, very soft and is really starting to stretch. I had the connected halter on her, so I switched to the long lines and we definitely found a little opposition. We had some discussion about steering, which I didn't find unusual. But we worked thru that and got to a very soft place.

I left the connected halter on and switched back to the short rope. Got on and had a nice walk all around the arena, even going where I wanted mostly! Its a new feel for her and she did really well!

And then we worked on Pulling me up the hill!
And I did lead a horse to water and she did drink!

Then decided it was warm enough for a scrub and she was pretty good about it..Felix was helping, he loves to help have a bath...but as you can see afterwards she told me what she thought about being clean...
She groveled for awhile! Didn't mean to take it slo-mo so the whole video was too big to download!

Sweat Pattern

We finally got one on yesterdays Ride!!!  So its better than I was expecting! It is a little tight, but it was not too serious, especially since most of homeward is downhill we offen see the rough hairs. The saddle pad was really great, it didn't move and stayed well up in the gullet. These pictures are after she is washed, as sometimes you can see the dry areas better with the contrast. This picture is perfect down the back, we want it dry! and its almost even, just a little off to the Right. On the left the area circled has rough hairs and was just a little dry, bigger than the right side, but makes sense with the slight shift to the right. On the Right side you can see the dry spot better, again because the saddle shifted slightly right it put a little more pressure on this side. Those areas are our watch spots, we hope it gets better as she develops. Some of the asymmetry may be coming from uneven muscle development from her tight shoulders.

Catching Game and Body Wrap

so...Rosie has learned that the catching game means she turns and looks and you come to her. To play the game with its intent is to teach the horse to come to catch the human! This is important distinction in that we want her to say "play with me!" It is habit now, which we will change, and after some play today I got several steps to me!  Ground play is good, she is responsive and light. She just needs some connection through her ribs to the hind end. In that light I gave her a body wrap ! Which she seemed to enjoy!
